It appears beneficiaries of the free Senior High School (free SHS) introduced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo are not so enthused with the policy.
At least, looking at the utterances from a good number of the beneficiaries of the policy, who are now writing their final examinations, one cannot help drawing that conclusion. And such a conclusion wouldn’t be farfetched.
This is because, social media is awash with videos and posts from some of the final year free SHS students who have suddenly turned against the policy and president Akufo-Addo. Some of these social media posts include students demonstrating and destroying school property after taking their Integrated Science paper on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. Others are also seen in videos using sticks to hit learning materials provided them by the government to help them pass their final exams. And there are those videos that show some of the students simply venting their spleen the president. Along with this conduct came curses on president Akufo-Addo.
But what is sadder yet is that some of the beneficiaries of the free SHS policy have openly cursed the policy and asked president Akufo-Addo to take his ‘f**king’ free education. One of such videos has the following utterances:
“These people….Nana Addo, look at the paper….Nana Addo… the paper is very hard (difficult)…hwɛ (i.e. see),” said a boy among a group of boys who had apparently just finished writing the Integrated Science paper. His mates looked on and cheered as the boy went on:
“We couldn’t solve anything. Herh, Nana Addo, you’ll kill us oo, free education like this? Take your f**king free education, Nana Addo, we don’t want free education again”, he concluded in the 15 -second video.
As stated earlier, this group of boys aren’t alone in this show of what looks like ingratitude. It is all over social media, and the main reason given for this conduct is that, no question came from the past WASSCE exams questions that government provided to students to help them pass their exams.
Another reason is that some leaked questions that the students were relying on to pass their exams, never appeared in the exam questions they wrote today. Although the leaked questions were later described as fake by the Ghana Education Service (GES), the students seem to be demanding their pound of flesh from the government.
But the most unfortunate reasons some of the students give is that they didn’t get the chance to cheat because the invigilators were too strict.
Whatever it is, it appears the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government is not going to have it easy convincing these students to vote for them because of the free SHS policy. Sadly, president Akufo-Addo has himself affectionately nicknamed them the ‘Akufo-Addo graduates.’ So will the Akufo-Addo graduates disappoint Akufo-Addo?
