Charles Kwablan Akonnor is to coach the senior national team, the Black Stars, after Management of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) did not renew former coach Akwasi Appiah’s contract.
Popularly called C.K. Akonnor, the 45-years-old will be the next local coach after serving as assistant coach of the team for some years now.
According to a Joy Sports report, “the government insisted on having a local coach” and C. K. having served as assistant coach thus far, is seen as the best man to handle the senior national team.
C.K. Akonnor comes with very rich experience, having coached Sekondi XI Wise in 2009, and Accra Hearts of Oak in 2012. The man, who was shortlisted in 2019 to coach the Guinea national team, also played roles as head coach of Dreams FC, Ashantigold and Kotoko.
He appeared for Ghana 41 times, scoring 12 goals in those appearances.
The former Black Stars Captain also played for Germany, Cyprus and Denmark.
It will be interesting to see the change that C. K. Akonnor brings to the table.
