Dr Charles Wereko Brobbey believes they EC doesn't need to compile a new voters register.

Veteran politician and social commentator, Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey, has observed that it is not possible for the Electoral Commission to claim that the current voters register is not fit to be used for the 2020 elections.

According to the former CEO of the Volta River Authority, since the EC had early said they had “detected, deleted and prosecuted double registrants only a year ago,” it sounds odd to now make the claim that a register so treated needs to be replaced barely a year later.

Tarzan, as he is popularly called, made the observation in a brief but loaded Facebook post Thursday, January 9, 2020.

The Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission recently announced plans to replace the current voters register to meet current trends.

The EC insists the current register is credible, but what many cannot understand is why they would want to spend a whopping amount of GHC440m to replace the current register.

Mrs Jean Mensa, Chair of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, says the voters register is very credible, but insists on the compilation of a new voters register with a facial recognition feature.

But, a section of the Ghanaian populace feels that replacing the current voters register is only a waste of the nation’s resources.

The largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress’ reps on the Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC) walked out of a meeting called by the Electoral Commission to exhibit a new registration system. The party insists it will not back attempts to replace the current register. As part of their protests, the NDC and other political parties, have scheduled a demonstration in a few days to register their displeasure.

Besides the NDC, a good number of well-meaning Ghanaians have also expressed doubt about the need for a new register.

Policy think tank, IMAN’s founding president, Mr. Franklin Cudjoe, has called the EC’s repeated attempts to argue out the need for a new register, a “tall tale of yarns.” He further wondered why the new register budget of GHC440m cannot be channelled into “our dangerous life-shortening healthcare system” instead of dissipating it on a wasteful and needless new voters register.

Below is Dr Wereko Brobbey’s Facebook post:

“A #REGISTER THAT DETECTED, DELETETED & PROSECUTED DOUBLE REGISTRANTS, < A YR AGO, CANT BE DEFECTIVE, OBSOLETE & UNFIT 4 PURPOSE😧”
