“WASSCE exams deliberately leaked for political purposes”

There are allegations that the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) currently ongoing in Ghana has had some of its papers deliberately leaked. Some social media users have shared portions of the alleged leaked Integrated Science paper, which is alleged to have been secured with a password in a portable document format (PDF) format for candidates to download.

And the alleged reason for the ‘deliberate leakage’ is to score political points.

This is because, if an overwhelming number of candidates pass the 2020 WASSCE, the government can beat its chest and tout its Free SHS policy as being very effective. It would also reap the political benefits.

Already, there have been instances where opposition politicians have sought to cast doubt on the quality of the policy rolled out by the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. In that regard, fingers have always been pointed to the overcrowding, double track system, inadequate infrastructure and general lack of teaching and learning materials.

But the government has often sought to downplay on the concerns of these opposition politicians. For example, on a number of occasions, President Akufo-Addo had urged beneficiaries of the free SHS policy to learn hard and pass their exams to ‘shame critics.’ Although the president didn’t name opposition politicians as the critics that should be shamed, a careful observer could easily tell those he was aiming at them.

Consequently, government’s efforts and decisions regarding the final year students of the free SHS policy has always aroused suspicions from critics. On the other hand, government continues to do everything to ensure that the free SHS candidates pass their final exams with flying colours.

Perhaps it is this determination and insinuation-casting on the part of government that has led to the latest development.

Sharing a sample of the alleged leaked Integrated Science paper on his Facebook page, Raymond Ablorh, a Communications consultant, wrote:

“Information I’ve is that a General Paper for Final Year Free SHS schools has been deliberately leaked with a password code to aid students pass their final year exams for political purposes.”
